I had a feeling that the stone dial would be among the new products this year. But never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that Rolex would make an emoji watch.

Let me stop here and explain. Rolex released several Day-Date watches for this year’s watch show, but what made the whole trade show buzz was that the Day-Date shows neither the date nor the day of the week.

In its place is a disc that includes seven inspirational words, which are the date inside the curved aperture usually located at 12 o’clock: “Joy”, “Eternity”, “Gratitude”, “Peace”, “Faith”, “Love” and “Hope”. The date window at 3 o’clock, traditionally known as the display date (which feels like saying the sky is blue and the sun is hot, but I have a good reason for that) that now displays one of 31 emoji. These include a kissy face, a four-leaf clover, a figure-eight ball, a heart, a peace symbol, and the Rolex crown (petitioning Apple on behalf of the watch world to make it the official emoji).

Available in white and yellow gold, this watch has a turquoise dial base or Everose with an orange base. Both dials include a multi-colored puzzle pattern that is almost as surprising and random as the emoji. There are 10 iridescent baguette-cut sapphire indices that match the puzzle. All of this is, of course, mounted on a presidential strap.

If you’re like me, you probably need to let the shock subside before you form a clear opinion about this replica luxury watches. So let’s talk about the stone dial and take a minute to breathe, reorganize, and realign our brains.

I was lucky enough to try on the carnelian dial in yellow gold today. I had one of those moments where I imagined Malaika 2.0 living the good life and owning this watch.

The new Day-Date is equipped with the 3255 movement, which includes the patented Chronergy escapement. This escapement is made of nickel-phosphorus and is resistant to strong magnetic fields. The movement is equipped with a blue Parachrom hairspring, made by Rolex from a paramagnetic alloy, which is extremely stable in the face of temperature variations and is highly resistant to shocks. The oscillator is mounted on a patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorber designed by Rolex, which increases the resistance of the movement. The oscillating weight is now fitted with an optimized ball bearing.

Okay, take a deep breath. We’ve gotten pretty technical. I think we’re ready to go back to emoji luxury replica watches.

It’s quirky and borders on crazy, so much so that when I look at it I can’t tell if I’m picturing the watch in my head because of the cross-continental time difference. Usually, that feeling is reserved for brands like Richard Mille (as loyal Hodinkee readers will know, which recently released its own emoji watch).

I tried everything I could to keep this watch from being a bad joke about the “Live and Laugh Love” logo on your wrist. Honestly, it does have more depth to it than the typical suburban millennial mom who rubs crystals and keeps a gratitude journal. Sure, it’s quirky, but it’s a sign of the times.

If Rolex releases a Day-Date with an emoji, then we’ve officially entered a new frontier in the world of watchmaking. Ben Kramer joked about a collector who called the watch a production line for the brand. From now on, we’ll look at Rolex’s releases as pre-emoji or post-emoji.

The Rolex Datejust is one of the brand’s oldest models. Two weeks ago, Phillips stated that it would be selling a Rolex Submariner replica given by Steve McQueen to his stunt man Loren Janes, the watch world has been buzzing. It’s common for replica watches with rich provenance to come up at auction, to hammer for big money and to cause lots of excitement. With the Loren Janes Submariner though, many people have called the official Phillips story into question, most notably questioning the lineage of the watch on the block and whether or not Steve McQueen actually wore the watch himself for years before giving it to Janes. When there begun to be smoke, we went looking for the fire. It was looking like most of the commotion was nothing more than speculation after lots of phone calls, emails, and text messages.
As the Submariner watch exists today, it has a matte, four-line 5512 dial, despite being a 5513 from the mid-1960s. Clearly this is a replacement, but that’s only natural given the condition of the watch after the fire. The watch also comes with new bezel, new hands, and a new bracelet, and it also received a thorough polishing. The watch is being sold with a period-correct 5513 dial and hand set that are not original so any future owner could switch them back should they so desire.
The letters from Janes and the replica Rolex are used as two critical supporting documents for the provenance of the watch. However, neither seems fully reliable for confirming the full story. Rolex’s letter does not contain enough detail about the state of the watch to give us a true sense of what was done to it, and Janes’s letter was written only four months before he passed away due to Alzheimer’s complications.
We tried to answer the first question, and we were able to gain access to the photographs provided to the Janes family by Rolex after the watch’s restoration. In them the watch looks very similar to the state it’s in today, though we cannot tell for certain because of the quality of the photos. These photographs are not published here since we do not have the rights to do so, however in our estimation they confirm that the watch is being sold in the condition it was in upon leaving the Rolex Service Center.
We don’t know exactly what year the watch was gifted to Janes or if McQueen ever wore this watch prior to giving it to him. Given the timeline of events that Phillips provides, with the watch dating to years before it was given to Janes, it would only make sense that it lived some kind of life with McQueen. But without a solo confirmation of these dates in some kind of sales record or photographic evidence, it’s impossible to know actually.
At the time, many of the stunt roles were useless, making this more difficult to pin down than you’d think. What is clear, regardless of the exact timeline, is that Janes and McQueen did work together and did know one another quite well.

With so many special features, such as simple vintage looks, rich tones, a brushed dial and a cinnamon suede strap to die for, all for a very reasonable price, the Longines Heritage 1945 – it’s the best watch for a crisp winter’s day.
One of the key points on our Baselworld calendar is to see what heritage re-release Longines has cooked up, and who boy, have they pulled out all the stops in 2017 or what. You’re looking at the Heritage 1945, a completely on point interpretation of a mid-century dress watch. Based on a 1945 design called the Calatrava by collectors, this watch does everything correctly. Funnily enough, it’s the exact watch that Sunflowerman illustrated as part of the Watercolour Watch project back in 2015.
The 40mm steel case is simple, and not overly fussy, with a flat bezel just the right width and a slender-yet-functional crown. The mid-tan nubuck strap with single line of reinforcing stitching in contrasting thread walks an extremely straight line between dress and casual.
The most sensible part is the dial. For such a minimal layout, Longines replica has packed it full of sexy detail. To begin with, there’s the vintage velvet effect of the brushed copper-tone convex dial, then there’s the alternating steel-tone applied hours markers and printed mid-century Arabic numerals, all of which contrasts with the long, elegant leaf hands in blued steel. The small seconds subdial has a concentric circular finish, just to make things interesting and funny.
What’s more, the curved “Automatic” text is a very special touch. Though, if I was being particularly critical I would like the seconds subdial a little lower down the dial. The 1945 original was powered by the manually wound 12.68Z, but on this remake Longines has made a concession to modernity with the inclusion of automatic model.
One or two of these elements would make the Longines Heritage 1945 a compelling and significant proposition, but all of them together make it a real winner. And the best thing is no date window.
